Shortlist announced for 5th Philippines Property Awards 2017

Nearly 20 companies are in contention for the archipelago’s most prestigious industry awards for real estate excellence, including last year’s top winners

Megaworld Corporation roars to the top of the race with 25 appearances in the final shortlist

The complete 2017 shortlist for the fifth annual PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards has been announced, featuring previous winners and up-and-coming developers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Spanning the residential, commercial and design sectors, the final shortlist is led by 2016 Best Developer winner Megaworld Corporation, which is known for pioneering the integrated urban township concept in the country.

Presented by title sponsor Kohler, this year’s competition could become another landmark event for the celebrated developer as it collects a total of 25 official nominations, more than any other company.

Megaworld projects are competing against each other in various categories, including Best Luxury Condo Development and Best High End Condo Development for Metro Manila, Best Retail Development, and Best Residential Architectural Design.

Developers Robinsons Land Corporation and ArthaLand are joined by The Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company (Philam Life) in second place with five nods each. Philam Life, currently the largest insurance firm in the country, made the cut after entering its long-awaited office building located in Cebu Business Park.

When the company launched its project more than three years ago, they said it would be one of the tallest towers in Metro Cebu. The company plans to make the office building, which has been nominated for Best BPO Office Development, its headquarters in central Philippines.

With a very strong business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, modern office buildings are in high demand not just in Metro Manila. Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines and head judge of the Philippines Property Awards, believes that the sector will continue to flourish despite recent plans to levy exorbitant taxes on US-based outsourcing firms that conduct business in the country.

Opening new doors

“My take on it is that those BPO contracts with the US will still be honoured. Doors are also opening to China and Russia. I look at it more as an opening up of a relationship to other countries,” he said.

The fifth edition of Awards is also opening doors to new categories in the expanded 2017 programme. For the first time, the panel of judges will honour developments that incorporate universal design elements.

“Universal Design is the design of a built environment that can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability,” explained Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards. “We are proud to recognise it alongside longstanding awards for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development as part of PropertyGuru Group’s own CSR mission.”

“With the commercial real estate and condominium segments in the Philippines flourishing, we believe it’s time to reward the developers who put consumers first,” he added. “Their projects exhibit dedication and excellence in real estate for which the Awards stand.”

Rapidly-growing real estate market

A total of 89 entries were received this year, following a six-month nomination and judging process supervised by BDO, one of the world’s largest accountancy and auditing firms.

Winners will be revealed at a black-tie gala dinner and awards presentation ceremony on Thursday, 4 May 2017, at the Fairmont Makati, were about 300 of the country’s top industry executives will be in attendance, including the evening’s guest of honour, Department of Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon T. Teo, who will be giving the opening keynote address and discuss the impact of the country’s tourism sector on the rapidly-growing real estate market.

During the gala dinner, a special award will be also be presented to Robinsons Land Corporation president Frederick D. Go, who has been chosen by the editors of Property Report magazine as the 2017 Philippines Real Estate Personality of the Year for “leading the company that transforms people's dreams into reality through real estate projects that last generations.”

Building dreams

“We want to leave a legacy of having improved the quality of life of everyone we have touched in our businesses, whether they are a mall customer or partner, an occupant in our office buildings, a hotel guest or a homeowner,” Go said on behalf of his firm. “We are building the business of building dreams and making life better.”

Main competition category country winners in the Philippines will advance to the two-day PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards grand finale this November at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore to compete for more regional accolades and to be crowned "the best in Asia”.

Hari V. Krishnan, CEO of PropertyGuru Group, said: “Congratulations to the developers who made the shortlist of the PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards. We’re excited to learn about the impressive projects across different segments, including the rapidly-growing office sector. This generation of young and tech-savvy real estate consumers, many of whom are thinking of buying or renting their first property in the Philippines, will be more equipped to make confident and informed property decisions based on the results of this year’s competition.”

PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards 2017 gala dinner is supported by title sponsor Kohler, co-sponsors JLL Philippines and Regus Philippines, official broadcaster The ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), official newspaper The Philippine STAR, official property portal Zipmatch.com, official charity CARE International, official supplier Titania Wine Cellar Inc, media partners Inquirer.net, Oxford Business Group, HGTV Asia and PropertyGuru Property Report magazine, supporting associations British Chamber of Commerce Philippines and European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, and official judging supervisor BDO, the world’s fifth largest auditing and accountancy firm led by co-managing partner Paul Ashburn.

Presented by Kohler in 2017, the acclaimed international event is organised by PropertyGuru Group, Asia’s leading online property group. The organisers are calling on Philippine developers as well as real estate agents, architects, interior designers, construction companies, suppliers and the general public to continue sending in their nominations online via AsiaPropertyAwards.com/nominations/. There is no fee to enter in any category.

'More recognised nationwide'

Chairman of the judging panel Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines, reflects on the judging process and importance of the Awards programme: “The panel had quite a task last year simply because there were a lot more entries across various categories and regions, up by around 50 percent, and the numbers of categories increased as well. We also received entries from new companies. I think it’s because this Awards are becoming more recognised nationwide. It’s certainly on the map and we hope this continues in years to come.”

Chairman of the Philippines Property Awards judging panel Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines, said that high-end developers are bullish in 2017

The official shortlist of nominees, comprising one Winner and up to four Highly Commended in each category, will be revealed by the independent judging panel led by Orr in early April 2017. The black-tie gala dinner is set to take place on 4 May 2017, once again at the Fairmont Makati, the official hotel venue of the Awards.

Prior to the gala dinner, a new Real Estate Personality of the Year will also be named by the editors of Asia’s industry leading Property Report magazine, PropertyGuru Group’s premium publication.

Main driver for Philippine economy

Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the Asia Property Awards, says of the growing impact of the Philippines Property Awards: “The support from developers, sponsors, media partners and business associations we have received over the years has been incredible – in the last five years we’ve seen the awards programme expand to include categories specifically created for regional developments in key markets such as Cebu, Davao and Iloilo.”

He adds: “The Awards continues to reflect a very strong Philippine real estate sector, which has now become one of the main drivers of the fast-growing Philippine economy that grew by around 9 percent in 2016.”

With an average attendance of 250 senior industry figures, C-level executives, architects, designers, suppliers, construction, real estate and media professionals, the Philippines Property Awards annual gala dinner is one of the most anticipated industry events of the year.

Each gala begins with a two-hour international cocktail networking reception, followed by a lavish four-course dinner, and the awards ceremony. Previous VIP guests and keynote speakers include Senator Franklin Drilon and former Tourism Secretary Ramon Reyes Jimenez Jr.

The company added: “The Awards aim to recognise the outstanding work of our developers, and we at JLL believe that these developers play a big role in nation-building.”

In the past 20 years, the Philippine property market has witnessed the boom of the BPO (business process outsourcing) industry, paving the way for more office space demand and expat and young professional residential surge.

“Real estate provides homes, commercial structures and boost tourism,” said JLL. “Its significant contribution to the economy and this country cannot be underestimated. Being a co-sponsor of the Philippines Property Awards is JLL’s way of showing our gratitude for all the success we have experienced this past 20 years.”

Megaworld Corporation took home its first-ever Best Developer award as well as three more gongs and 13 Highly Commended honours at the fourth annual Philippines Property Awards gala dinner.

The Dr Andrew L Tan-led company started the evening with an unprecedented 16 nominations, with Uptown Bonifacio getting six nods. The high-end urban township eventually won Best Residential Architectural Design for the Uptown Ritz condominium development.

Last year’s Best Developer winner SM Group was nominated for 10 awards through its various subsidiaries and eventually took home Best Commercial Development (Philippines) for SM Seaside City Cebu, a retail project undertaken by its commercial investment arm, SM Prime Holdings Inc.

The conglomerate, headed by Henry Sy Sr, the country’s richest man, also won the coveted Special Recognition in CSR for providing Filipinos “five-star” homes in prime locations around the country, as well as promoting a conducive learning experience for the youth by building and remodelling overpopulated public school classrooms across the islands.

Presented by Hansgrohe, the fourth edition of the Philippines Property Awards 2016 welcomed a new category to reward the country’s outstanding boutique developers. In the category for Best Boutique Developer, AppleOne Properties Inc pipped King Properties. Fellow Cebu-based firms, Primary Homes Inc and Cebu Landmasters Inc, collected several Winners and Highly Commended accolades in other categories.

With this year’s entries doubling to more than 200 compared to 2015, the time has come to widen the scope of the programme, a move that was welcomed by the independent panel of judges and trusted awards supervisor BDO.

“Whilst there’s still an emphasis on Metro Manila, there was an increase in the number of entries from Cebu and also Davao,” said Lindsay J Orr, chief operating officer of Jones Lang LaSalle Philippines and chairman of the judges. “What we need to do now is to continue to bang the drums and build the awareness for the Philippines Property Awards so that next year we make sure that we’ll have an even larger section of entries from other regions.”

Another highlight of the ceremony was the presentation to former Senate President Manuel B Villar Jr, founder of the Vista Land Group, of the Real Estate Personality of the Year award by the editors of Property Report. It was the only award not selected by the independent judging panel.

[gallery type="rectangular" size="full" ids="51279,51276"]

Known for his master planned developments called “Communicities,” the self-made billionaire saw his construction supplies business in the early 1970s grow into a quality housing developer.

“I am deeply grateful for, and profoundly humbled by, this recognition from the Philippines Property Awards,” said Villar. “For me, the Real Estate Personality of the Year award is a testament to how Vista Land has been an instrument in improving the lives of Filipinos by providing them homes to live comfortably and communities where necessities are within their reach. “

Proving his company’s worth as a quality housing specialist, Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc took home the Best Housing Development (Philippines) award for Northpoint, located in Davao. This project beat all the residential category winners from across the nation and, along with the other ‘best of the best’ winners from the Philippines, will move on to compete at the South East Asia Property Awards grand finale in Singapore this November.

“As the Asia Property Awards programme continues to grow in its 11th year, we are proud to accomplish our goal to showcase the finest developers and projects from the established and emerging locations in the Philippines,” says Terry Blackburn, founder of the Asia Property Awards and managing director of awards organiser PropertyGuru International. “We look forward to welcoming more entries from regional developers next year as we celebrate the achievements of Philippine real estate.”
