Shortlist announced for 5th Philippines Property Awards 2017

Nearly 20 companies are in contention for the archipelago’s most prestigious industry awards for real estate excellence, including last year’s top winners

Megaworld Corporation roars to the top of the race with 25 appearances in the final shortlist

The complete 2017 shortlist for the fifth annual PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards has been announced, featuring previous winners and up-and-coming developers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Spanning the residential, commercial and design sectors, the final shortlist is led by 2016 Best Developer winner Megaworld Corporation, which is known for pioneering the integrated urban township concept in the country.

Presented by title sponsor Kohler, this year’s competition could become another landmark event for the celebrated developer as it collects a total of 25 official nominations, more than any other company.

Megaworld projects are competing against each other in various categories, including Best Luxury Condo Development and Best High End Condo Development for Metro Manila, Best Retail Development, and Best Residential Architectural Design.

Developers Robinsons Land Corporation and ArthaLand are joined by The Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company (Philam Life) in second place with five nods each. Philam Life, currently the largest insurance firm in the country, made the cut after entering its long-awaited office building located in Cebu Business Park.

When the company launched its project more than three years ago, they said it would be one of the tallest towers in Metro Cebu. The company plans to make the office building, which has been nominated for Best BPO Office Development, its headquarters in central Philippines.

With a very strong business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, modern office buildings are in high demand not just in Metro Manila. Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines and head judge of the Philippines Property Awards, believes that the sector will continue to flourish despite recent plans to levy exorbitant taxes on US-based outsourcing firms that conduct business in the country.

Opening new doors

“My take on it is that those BPO contracts with the US will still be honoured. Doors are also opening to China and Russia. I look at it more as an opening up of a relationship to other countries,” he said.

The fifth edition of Awards is also opening doors to new categories in the expanded 2017 programme. For the first time, the panel of judges will honour developments that incorporate universal design elements.

“Universal Design is the design of a built environment that can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability,” explained Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards. “We are proud to recognise it alongside longstanding awards for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development as part of PropertyGuru Group’s own CSR mission.”

“With the commercial real estate and condominium segments in the Philippines flourishing, we believe it’s time to reward the developers who put consumers first,” he added. “Their projects exhibit dedication and excellence in real estate for which the Awards stand.”

Rapidly-growing real estate market

A total of 89 entries were received this year, following a six-month nomination and judging process supervised by BDO, one of the world’s largest accountancy and auditing firms.

Winners will be revealed at a black-tie gala dinner and awards presentation ceremony on Thursday, 4 May 2017, at the Fairmont Makati, were about 300 of the country’s top industry executives will be in attendance, including the evening’s guest of honour, Department of Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon T. Teo, who will be giving the opening keynote address and discuss the impact of the country’s tourism sector on the rapidly-growing real estate market.

During the gala dinner, a special award will be also be presented to Robinsons Land Corporation president Frederick D. Go, who has been chosen by the editors of Property Report magazine as the 2017 Philippines Real Estate Personality of the Year for “leading the company that transforms people's dreams into reality through real estate projects that last generations.”

Building dreams

“We want to leave a legacy of having improved the quality of life of everyone we have touched in our businesses, whether they are a mall customer or partner, an occupant in our office buildings, a hotel guest or a homeowner,” Go said on behalf of his firm. “We are building the business of building dreams and making life better.”

Main competition category country winners in the Philippines will advance to the two-day PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards grand finale this November at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore to compete for more regional accolades and to be crowned "the best in Asia”.

Hari V. Krishnan, CEO of PropertyGuru Group, said: “Congratulations to the developers who made the shortlist of the PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards. We’re excited to learn about the impressive projects across different segments, including the rapidly-growing office sector. This generation of young and tech-savvy real estate consumers, many of whom are thinking of buying or renting their first property in the Philippines, will be more equipped to make confident and informed property decisions based on the results of this year’s competition.”

PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards 2017 gala dinner is supported by title sponsor Kohler, co-sponsors JLL Philippines and Regus Philippines, official broadcaster The ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), official newspaper The Philippine STAR, official property portal Zipmatch.com, official charity CARE International, official supplier Titania Wine Cellar Inc, media partners Inquirer.net, Oxford Business Group, HGTV Asia and PropertyGuru Property Report magazine, supporting associations British Chamber of Commerce Philippines and European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, and official judging supervisor BDO, the world’s fifth largest auditing and accountancy firm led by co-managing partner Paul Ashburn.

Asia Property Awards 2017 programme revamped to include 14 markets

Now celebrating its 12th year, the region’s most prestigious real estate awards series goes Asia-wide

Big changes are coming to the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards series, which is expanding in 2017 to include categories for exciting markets such as Mongolia, Laos, Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives.

The prestigious annual ceremony in Singapore, which will now also feature China, Hong Kong and Macau categories, will be held over two nights at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands on 7-8 November 2017.

“It has been an exciting journey for the Asia Property Awards after joining PropertyGuru last year,” said Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the Awards. “Our expanded awards scheme is a tribute to the strength of the Asian real estate industry. Fair judgement and transparency of process are at the heart of the Awards and we’re delighted to introduce the awards system to Asia’s rapidly growing property markets.”

He added: “For more than a decade we’ve had incredible support from various developers, who have been instrumental in the growth of the property sector. As we explore new countries for the platform, we will ensure that the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards truly is the region’s benchmark for the finest real estate developers, developments and design in the region.”

The 12-year-old programme, which was first launched in 2005 by Ensign Media in Thailand, also holds annual black-tie gala dinner events in Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia, playing host to up to 600 C-level executives, senior industry figures and VIPs at each event.

Country winners from the aforementioned 14 markets advance to the seventh annual PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards grand final in Singapore on 7-8 November to compete for regional titles and be crowned the “best in Asia” in 2017.

Last year’s grand final champion was Malaysia’s Sime Darby Property, which collected the biggest award for Best Developer (South East Asia).

“The recognition of Sime Darby Property as the Best Developer in South East Asia by such esteemed industry experts is further testament of our commitment as a trusted developer. We were very honoured to receive the award and our heartfelt appreciation goes to the organiser,” Dato’ Ir Jauhari Hamidi, managing director at Sime Darby Property, said in a press statement last November.

The PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards has an unparalleled reputation within the Asian real estate industry for being credible, fair and transparent, with an independent judging body, which comprises luminaries representing all real estate sectors, and a trusted awards supervisor in every market.

Following the format of the country awards, categories are divided into three sections: Developer, Development, and Design. All eligible nominations are rigorously and fairly judged by the panels of experts, based on the most detailed and fairest criteria:

  • Developers – reputation, image and corporate social responsibility initiatives; overall track record; displays of innovation; and achievement in the past 12 months.
  • Development and Design – location; value for money; unique selling points; state of completion; sales success; design concept, innovation and use of space; quality of amenities; and construction and materials used.

New regional categories to join the 2017 Awards include Best Mixed Use Development (Asia). While the award was presented in select country ceremonies last year (Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong/Macau), it will be the first time that a regional winner will be named.

Another new category is Best Universal Design Development (Asia), which is open to residential and commercial developments across the region that will be shortlisted in any category at the country awards. The project must be built environment that can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.

Overall, there will be seven Design, eight Development and two Developer categories at the grand finale ceremony.

Hari V. Krishnan, CEO of PropertyGuru Group, said: “Because of the Asia Property Awards, consumers are empowered to make confident property decisions, whether they’re first-time buyers, expat renters or serial investors. Property knowledge is essential in our culture at PropertyGuru. We wish the country winners the best as they advance to compete at our grand final in Singapore."

The two gala events will each begin with a two-hour international networking cocktail reception, followed by the opening remarks and speeches, four-course dinner, and the awards ceremony proper. The first night on 7 November focuses on Singapore categories, and the second night on 8 November features the new markets and the regional competition. Alongside the gala dinner, PropertyGuru's C-suite conference – the two-day Singapore Real Estate Summit 2017 – will be held at the same venue in the daytime.

Nominations for 5th Philippines Property Awards gather momentum

Outstanding real estate developers and projects in Mega Manila, Cebu, Davao and key resort and BPO office locations are waiting to be recognised

Media briefing for the 5th PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards 2017 held on 1 February in Makati City

Deadline for submissions is on Friday, 3 March 2017

Nominations are open and are now flooding in for the fifth annual PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards, the biggest and most prestigious real estate awards programme in the country.

Presented by Kohler in 2017, the acclaimed international event is organised by PropertyGuru Group, Asia’s leading online property group. The organisers are calling on Philippine developers as well as real estate agents, architects, interior designers, construction companies, suppliers and the general public to continue sending in their nominations online via AsiaPropertyAwards.com/nominations/. There is no fee to enter in any category.

BDO, one of the world’s largest accounting and auditing firms, has been appointed once again as official judging supervisor to ensure that the entire nomination and judging process is fair and transparent.

Celebrating its landmark fifth year, the Philippines Property Awards 2017 is the search for the Philippines’ best property developers and developments located in the established and emerging property markets of Mega Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao, in addition to popular and emerging resort destinations and BPO office locations across the country.

Each year since its establishment in 2013, the Philippines Property Awards have highlighted the exciting evolution of the country’s real estate sector. Last year a total of 17 shortlisted developers walked away with 26 awards following a rigorous, six-month nomination and judging process.

Megaworld Corporation collected a record-breaking 17 awards and Highly Commended honours, including the 2016 Best Developer (Philippines) gong, while SM Prime Holdings Inc and Vista Land Group received multiple accolades, including one for Vista Land chairman Manny Villar for Real Estate Personality of the Year.

The 2017 edition presents an expanded awards scheme. New categories have been added, including a Special Recognition in Sustainable Development, which will reward the sustainable initiatives of outstanding developers from Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao.

'More recognised nationwide'

Chairman of the judging panel Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines, reflects on the judging process and importance of the Awards programme: “The panel had quite a task last year simply because there were a lot more entries across various categories and regions, up by around 50 percent, and the numbers of categories increased as well. We also received entries from new companies. I think it’s because this Awards are becoming more recognised nationwide. It’s certainly on the map and we hope this continues in years to come.”

Chairman of the Philippines Property Awards judging panel Lindsay J. Orr, chairman of JLL Philippines, said that high-end developers are bullish in 2017

The official shortlist of nominees, comprising one Winner and up to four Highly Commended in each category, will be revealed by the independent judging panel led by Orr in early April 2017. Prior to the gala dinner, a new Real Estate Personality of the Year will also be named by the editors of Asia’s industry leading Property Report magazine, PropertyGuru Group’s premium publication.

Main driver for Philippine economy

Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the Asia Property Awards, says of the growing impact of the Philippines Property Awards: “The support from developers, sponsors, media partners and business associations we have received over the years has been incredible – in the last five years we’ve seen the awards programme expand to include categories specifically created for regional developments in key markets such as Cebu, Davao and Iloilo.”

He adds: “The Awards continues to reflect a very strong Philippine real estate sector, which has now become one of the main drivers of the fast-growing Philippine economy that grew by around 9 percent in 2016.”

With an average attendance of 250 senior industry figures, C-level executives, architects, designers, suppliers, construction, real estate and media professionals, the Philippines Property Awards annual gala dinner is one of the most anticipated industry events of the year.

Note: The Winners in the Best Developer, Best Residential Development (Cambodia), and Best Commercial Development (Cambodia) categories will be announced during the gala dinner on 24 March 2017. The Cambodia Real Estate Personality of the Year winner will be revealed by the editors of Property Report before the event.

After several months of screening, deliberations and site visits, the Awards’ nine-member independent judging panel led by chairman Sorn Seap, founder and director of Key Real Estate Co Ltd, will meet one last time to finalise their assessment under the guidance of official judging supervisor BDO, the world’s fifth largest accountancy and auditing firm.

“The property boom in the past 10 years has seen a drastic change. In 2007 there were only two high-rise buildings in Phnom Penh – now we have hundreds across the city,” says Sorn, who was elected head judge earlier this year. “Land prices have also grown exponentially for up to 75 percent in the last decade, and certain developments have been valued between USD3,500 and 4,500 per square metre. This growth has made the Cambodian real estate market very attractive for investors in the region and Asia.”

He adds: “I certainly gained a lot of new knowledge from the other judges, who possess different skills than myself, at every stage of this competition. In the last six months we exchanged expert opinions and technical considerations, and discussed various strengths of each entry. I feel so proud to be a judge for the Cambodia Property Awards 2017.”

Top country winners in Cambodia will be moving forward to the two-day PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards grand finale this November in Singapore to compete for more regional accolades.

“Cambodia real estate has grown tremendously in the last few years, and we look forward to bringing lessons from the more established regional markets to this country, to assist with the maturation process. PropertyGuru Group’s presence in Cambodia through the Asia Property Awards helps us progress our company mission of helping people make confident property decisions."

“Cambodia is a small but certainly fast-moving market, with plenty of room for everyone, and it’s a delight to see these returning and new developers joining the Asia Property Awards,” says Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards.

“There has always been a huge potential in Cambodia real estate, especially in the affordable housing segment, given that the Cambodian finance sector is more consolidated compared to other neighbouring countries in ASEAN,” he continues. “The Awards programme gives the local industry a big push for innovation and opportunity to continue raising the bar of excellence.”

Nominations are now open to the general public and will close on Friday, 30 June

The annual PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards, which seeks to reward the finest developers, properties and real estate personalities across the Kingdom, will return for its 12th annual edition this September.

PropertyGuru Group, the organiser of the long-running event, expects to receive more than 300 entries from developers with ongoing projects located in the top tier markets of Bangkok and Phuket, as well as emerging destinations of Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Samui, Phang Nga/Krabi, the Eastern Seaboard, the North East, and Songkhla.

Developers, industry professionals and the general public are now invited to submit nominations for more than 30 categories until Friday, 30 June 2017. Online submissions are accepted via AsiaPropertyAwards.com/nomination/thailand/.

Panelists speak of the longevity and credibility of the annual PropertyGuru Thailand Property Awards 2017

“This is a great opportunity to share to the world what are being developed in those locations and to celebrate the key factors that drive the growth of the real estate industry in Thailand,” said Suphin Mechuchep, managing director of JLL Thailand and incumbent chairwoman of the independent judging panel.

Encouraged by the increasing inbound interest from institutional investors – especially the Chinese – JLL’s Mechuchep believes that despite the limited transactional opportunities available to foreign entities, real estate activity within various segments should pick up as soon as more investors learn about the local market and how certain developments in Bangkok and major resort areas could benefit from such support.

Increased recognition and respect from the property sector

An internationally recognised and respected platform that has championed the progress of the Thai real estate sector for over a decade now, the Thailand Property Awards debuted in 2005 when the Southeast Asian property scene was just starting to make global strides.

“The Thailand Property Awards have showcased high quality developments and have well demonstrated an increased recognition and respect gained from the country’s real estate industry,” Mechuchep noted in her speech during the Awards’ 11th anniversary gala dinner. That event was attended by around 600 VIPs and senior industry figures and saw MQDC Magnolia Quality Development Corporation crowned the Best Developer (Thailand) and collect a total of eight awards.

Mechuchep and DTGO Group president Raj Tanta-Nanta, who represents MQDC, both appeared at the exclusive media launch for the 12th edition of the Awards held at the VA Room of Plaza Athenee Bangkok, a Royal Meridien hotel on 1 March 2017.

The MQDC executive expressed his gratitude to the judges for giving their winning and highly commended projects the industry’s stamp of approval. “We’re very humbled and proud to win Best Green Development and the Special Recognition in Sustainable Development last year. Our projects are top quality and this year we aim to continue promoting ‘sustainnovation’ in our developments.”

Also present at the launch were: Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards; Kamolpat Swaengkit, country manager of DDproperty.com, official property portal; Paul Ashburn, co-managing partner of BDO Thailand, official judging supervisor; and Jaime Rivera, Asia regional manager of Crystal Lagoons, the event’s co-sponsor.

One of the region’s real estate leaders

“Time and again Thailand has proven to be one of the region’s real estate leaders – whether it’s the retail, hospitality, villa or luxury residential segment – as we have seen in the quality of entrants in the past 12 years. The Awards are meant to put a spotlight on the strongest aspects of the industry,” said Blackburn.

“We are pleased that developer demand has resulted in new categories for Songkhla and the North East and to debut our new Special Recognition in Universal Design category,” he added. “Universal Design is the design of a built environment that can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability and we are proud to recognise it alongside longstanding awards for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development as part of PropertyGuru Group’s own CSR mission.”

Among the major categories in which developers will compete for the Best of the Best honours include: Best Condo Development (Thailand), whose Winner will be picked from condo categories winners; Best Housing Development (Thailand), chosen from the Winners pool of villa and housing categories; and Best Commercial Development (Thailand), chosen from the hotel, retail and office categories.
